Meet the President
Tom Insko was named the 12th president of Eastern Oregon University May 12, 2015, and formally began serving in his new role on July 1, 2015.
A native of eastern Oregon, Insko grew up on a family farm 35 miles north of La Grande. He is a graduate of EOU with degrees in mathematics and business economics and played intercollegiate basketball for the Mountaineers. He holds a master’s of business administration from the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va.
Prior to becoming EOU’s president, he was the area manager of Boise Cascade’s Inland Region, which includes nine manufacturing facilities, two plywood plants, four pine lumber mills, one stud mill, one particleboard plant and a laminated beam manufacturing facility. Located in northeast Oregon, northeast Washington and southwest Idaho, these operations currently employ approximately 1,200 people.
Insko worked for Boise Cascade for 20 years holding positions of administrative analyst, plant manager, production manager, senior financing manager, region manager and area manager during his tenure. His most recent responsibilities included all operational aspects of the inland manufacturing facilities, as well as the sales organization for the composite panel business. He also managed state and federal forest policy activities for the company.
Insko was appointed by the governor to serve as a member of the Business Oregon Commission, the Northeast Oregon Regional Solutions Committee and the EOU governing Board of Trustees. He serves on the Western Resources Legal Center board of directors and is past president of the EOU Foundation. Additionally, he served from 2012-2018 on the Oregon State Board of Forestry.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees of Eastern Oregon University is the governing body of the university. The Board is responsible for assuring the success of the university and has broad authority to protect the interests of the university. The Board performs such duties as determining the university’s mission and strategic plan; hiring and supervising the university president; assuring the university’s assets are properly managed; determining the university budget; and setting tuition and fees.
The Board is made up of volunteers (trustees) who are committed to the promise of higher education in eastern Oregon and beyond. Trustees are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the state Senate. Trustees are connected to the university, the region and students they serve. They are alumni, community members, and leaders in education, business, culture and government There are 15trustees. Eleven of these are drawn from the general public. One member each is drawn from the students, staff, and faculty of the university. The fifteenth trustee is the university president, who servesex officiowithout the power to vote. The trustees drawn from the general public serve four-year terms. Trustees selected from the students, faculty, and staff serve two-year terms. The Board has three standing committees that address specific areas of the Board’s work: theAcademic and Student Affairs Committee, theFinance and Administration Committee, and theGovernance Committee. The Boardmeetsapproximately five times per year, as do the committees.
