Student Members of the ACS

美国化学学会的EOU学生会员分会是大学校园里最活跃的俱乐部之一。俱乐部参加了许多活动,包括社区外展、专业活动、大学服务和筹款。

Community Outreach

In an effort to attract young people to science in rural Eastern Oregon, the chemistry club hosts annual magic shows for grade school and middle school students. These shows are a great source of entertainment and education for students, and allow them to experience the “explosive” side of chemistry! Many members of the chemistry club and chemistry department also participated in Girls in Science, a day-long event that brings over 100 girls, sixth to eighth grade, to solve a scientific mystery. In addition, the club has also volunteered with the annual EOU Robotics Competition and Boy Scouts of America.

National ACS Meetings

Through many different fundraising activities, the chemistry club raises money to send members to National American Chemical Society (ACS) meetings. At national meetings, students present research posters at undergraduate sessions, and are also able to attend various workshops and lectures pertaining to new research in chemistry. Students also have the opportunity to learn about graduate school and job opportunities in the great field of chemistry.

Biochemistry Pathway

Chemistry Pathway

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Departments are housed in Badgley Hall, the newest addition to the EOU campus. This state-of-the-art science center provides classrooms and laboratories for biology, biochemistry, chemistry, computer science, physics, and psychology programs. Badgley Hall maintains a full-time support-staff consisting of an office specialist, instrument technician, and stockroom manager.

The Chemistry and Biochemistry Departments offer an extensive collection of chemical instrumentation. Major research equipment includes:

  • JEOL AS400 400 MHz NMR spectrometer
  • Applied Photophysics SX.18MV-R stopped-flow dual mixing spectrophotometer (dead time ~1ms) with photomultiplier and diode array detection units, housed within an anaerobic glove box
  • Two Cary 50 UV/vis spectrophotometers (both with thermostatted cell holders for kinetic studies)
  • Nicolet Avatar 360 Fourier-transform infrared spectrophotometer
  • Varian Saturn 2200 mass spectrometer with a GP 3800 gas chromatograph and Tekmar purge and trap sampler
  • Varian GP 3380 gas chromatograph
  • Beckman DNA sequencer
  • AKTA UPC-10 protein chromatography system

“I took every opportunity I could to be more involved on and off campus. Being an officer of multiple clubs helped develop my leadership skills and broaden my network.”

Research Opportunities

For many students and faculty, summer means time for a break. For EOU’s science department it’s an opportunity to accomplish some major research.Read more.

Here at EOU, student participation is one of our top priorities. We encourage community involvement and promote hands-on learning through undergraduate research, which is an integral part of our curriculum. Students receive comprehensive instruction on an extensive collection of chemical instrumentation, and are able to choose from a diverse range of courses. Many different learning opportunities are also available, including local and regional internships, which allow students to gain experience in a professional work setting.

The department of Chemistry and Biochemistry offers a B.S. degree in Chemistry-Biochemistry with pathways for both Chemistry and Biochemistry, as well as minors in Chemistry and Environmental Chemistry.
